“All About Americas”All About Americas" is the second installment of the "All About..." series which uses overland expeditions as a vehicle to explore social, cultural, environmental and political issues. All About Americas is based on an overland journey from Alaska to Chile . Once again, Niamh and Malachy will weave current issues into stories of adventure and survival as they battle the challenges of the road. Follow their adventures in national print and broadcast media or else bookmark this page. In 2005, the pair travelled overland from Cairo to Capetown with All About Africa. They gave talks to primary and secondary school students, published weekly articles in a regional newspaper, posted stories on a website and visited aid projects with Irish interest along the route. Who We AreMalachy Harty has travelled overland in five continents. He has studied and worked as a chef and later as a photographer and journalist. He is an environmentalist by birth. "A trip down the road can be fascinating. It's how open you are to discovery that matters. I am daunted by this trip, possibly more so than any other trip: the distances are greater, the time is more limited and I hate running. But I do love a challenge. Already, I'm excited. It will be a hard slog, but it’s going to be fun." Niamh O Riordan is a musician, photographer, student, lecturer and traveler. She is currently completing a doctorate in Information Systems and has third level qualifications in music, computer science and e-commerce. She’s very optimistic about the project. "When we got back from Africa it seemed as if everyone had taken an interest not in us, but in Africa. Starting out, they told us we'd come home in body bags. But after a while, I think they really started to envy us. And that's powerful. That's what I like about these projects - we can change people’s perceptions of far away places with our own stories, our words and images." |
